Form

“Form is a process in a state of being and becoming!”

Form is a dynamic process; a snapshot within a continuous flow of change. It is a constant recalibration that can never be definitive. Every meaningful form is unique and occurs only once!

GEM Method – Ton Greten

The human body as an architectural structure…

very body possesses a unique form. Form influences us from the very beginning as an embryo, up to the exact point in life where you find yourself right now. But the secret of form is not the form itself, but its continuous alteration. Form is never definitive! Think of a wave in the sea, a flame, or the human body in motion.

The G.E.M. method addresses 10 specific body parts to create a continuous flow of forms. These body parts are deliberately defined in spacetime. Form within dance is therefore not a static posture, but a living composition; a fluid succession of moments.

Structure, exploration, and transformation

As a fundamental element of art, Form refers to the three-dimensional structure and organization of movements and patterns within a dance. You can explore, experience, and discover this form within your own body awareness through three contrasts:
  • Single versus Compound
  • Geometric versus Organic
  • Symmetric versus Asymmetric

By exploring form in dance through bending, stretching, and rotating, you create a unique and exciting choreography. Precisely because form is subject to constant change, it invites endless creation.

Break your fixed patterns and transform your dance

Do you want to discover how to break old habits and truly deploy form as a living process? In my book The G.E.M. method – Dance from a different perspective, I provide you with the terminology and the tools to make the unconscious conscious. Discover how the synergy between Form, Expression, and Dynamics leads to a unique performance.

The GEM

The GEM Method is a holistic approach, created and developed by Ton Greten. GEM stands for “Greten Equation Movement”. It is based on the mutual and reciprocal relation between three variables. The performance of Form, Expression and Dynamic combined will result in a certain Personality.

Personality = Form + Expression + Dynamic; P = F+E+D (F.E.D.)
